PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — More than 200 members of Amnesty International and supporters from across the globe gathered in downtown Portland Friday to rally against torture.

Wearing orange ponchos resembling uniforms of detainees in Guantanamo Bay and waving signs, the group spoke about torture cases in numerous countries but focused on what they see as a growing number being carried out by the U.S. government.

“Apart from the international genocides, nothing has been more disturbing than to know that my country - our country - has made the list of torturers,” William Schulz, U.S. executive director of Amnesty International said at the rally.

The groups says that since 2001, strong evidence has emerged that the government is facilitating the use of torture and inhumane treatment by its agents around the world. The group wants all torture cases accounted for. [more]
