Judiciary Votes to Protect ‘Good Samaritans’ Who Assist Illegal Immigrants
Pushing to complete action on draft immigration legislation before a floor debate set for tomorrow, the Senate Judiciary Committee adopted an amendment today that would protect groups and individuals that provide humanitarian assistance to illegal immigrants.
The amendment, by Richard J. Durbin, D-Ill., was adopted, 10-7, after the panel by 7-10 rejected an alternative by Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., that would have required anyone planning to provide such assistance to register in advance with the Department of Homeland Security.
Durbin’s amendment won support from two Republicans, Mike DeWine of Ohio and Sam Brownback of Kansas.
The committee, which has met five times previously to mark up the draft bill by Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., is expected to tackle the two most controversial issues this afternoon — creation of a guest worker program and provisions to deal with the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants now in the country.
