Because we are not human
by Don Nash
Because we are not human, you send our children to fight your wars. They are maimed and worse yet it seems alright for after all, they are not human. Our children are merely pawns in the global game of oil. Exploit the oil then exploit our children. Or is it the other way around.
Because we are not human, we work for the mere pittance. That’s perfectly acceptable or would that be adequate for after all, we are not human. We come to your land in fear and escaping fear yet, we are dogs and never human so climb some fence we must to hide in plain sight and wash your clothes. Care for your children. Pump your precious gasoline. Exploit the oil then exploit our children for after all, we are not human.
You build the walls that must keep us out yet, here we are and here we hide and we die alone. What should it matter, we are not human. You detain us or rendition us then torture us and after all, how should it matter, we are not human.
We are not human therefore, we get the chop-shop medicine. When we are sick and dying or sick and simply alone, we get some panacea or the better part of neglect. We are not human you see so, we get what we deserve. Is that not right or correct or politically abject and wholly humanitarian in that non-humanitarian manner? We are not human so, sick and dying we die alone. Neglect is the better part of out of sight then out of mind. Of course you don’t mind now, do you. We are not human therefore, we are out of sight.
We are not human and we are everywhere and we account for not so much. Well, of course we account for that exploitation. The precious exploitation. Oil has value and the resources have value and those that are not human have no value at all. We are not human and therefore we are expendable. In war. In peace but, can we ever know real peace? Not for those that are not human. We are not human therefore we can never know peace. Only those that are human can know peace. Those that are human can know safety and those that are not human can know peril. Or persecution or would that be simply hate. Yes that’s the one. Hate. Humans hate the not humans and on the everyday, those that are hate those that aren’t and isn’t that the way? Of course that’s the way, the American way or the British way or simply fill in a blank. The blank is left open so fill in a blank.
We are not human and we are the migrants. Anywhere we are the migrants and we bear in our bodies the mark. The mark of the least of those among us. We are not human therefore we starve and our children starve then, we hide out of fear. The fear of discovery. The Lou is coming to discover where we hide. We are not human and we must hide.
We are not human and we are without a country, a nation, a place of safety. We are not human and we are without the politician that champions, us. We are not human and we are without the corporation to sponsor, us. We are the flotsam and the jetsam and the ugliest of the dregs. We are not human and we are despised by those that are human.
If we are not human then, why would you want our children? If we are not human then, why must our children die in your wars? If we are not human then, why do you detain us? Rendition us? Torture us? Remove us from our homeland? From Palestine? From Sudan? From Rwanda? From the Balkans? From any damn where there are those resources. We are not human but, if we were resources you’d want us then. To exploit. To use. To destroy to devour to dehumanize. We are not human and probably never have been. Not now and maybe not tomorrow but, someday we shall rise and walk as men and women that are human. Wait and see. But for now, we are not human and isn’t that the pity.
