War Weary
by Don Nash
A war rages in Palestine. That’s not exactly news. Support for the war in Palestine has surprising support in Brooklyn. That’s not exactly news. Except the war in Palestine spilled into the cedars of Lebanon. That’s not exactly news. Except when the wars come the dying comes and that’s not exactly news. When the wars come the destruction comes and more dying and that’s not exactly news either.
A new war rages in Somalia and that’s probably not exactly news. There’s been war in the Darfur and for quite some time and that’s not exactly news except, there would seem to be lots of “talking about the war in the Darfur. However, talk is just talk and that hardly alleviates the dying. So there’s dying in the Darfur and that’s not exactly news. There’s rape and horror and cannibalism and human inhumanity to dying humans and that’s not exactly news. That aforementioned “cannibalism is of the diplomatic variety so, it’s not exactly so bad. Hypocritical of course and disingenuous of course and that’s not exactly news. However it is the status quo and there’s nothing new about that.
There’s war in Sri Lanka and there’s war in Myanmar and there’s been war in the Balkans and there’s nothing new about that. There’s war in Colombia and there’s war in Oaxaca and there’s war in Nigeria and there’s war about damn near anywhere. Rwanda, Uganda, Belize (?), and Mozambique. Vietnam, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, and Chechnya. The Americans do it, the British do it, and we shouldn’t leave out the French. The Chinese, the Russians, the Turks, the Israelis, the Syrians, and the Canadians. Canadians? Yes the Canadians. The Canadians are part of any damn “coalition of the willing to war. Australians, Netherlanders, Lithuanians, and the Polish. Romanians, Italians, Pakistani, Japanese, and the denizens of Micronesia. There’s none of that exactly news or newsworthy. Just curious in that deadly manner.
There’s a little war here and a bigger war there and the single string theory of common bond would be the dying. It’s always the common denominator for the art of war. Why is war considered art? Why would that be? War isn’t art. War isn’t cute. War isn’t even user friendly. War is death friendly and horrifically destructive. Bloody and dismembering and orphan-tile in that bye-bye to mom and dad sort of separating manner. Got prosthetics? Got war profiteering? Got blue chips for more war?
Civil war and preemptive war and wars of ethnic cleansing. Ethnic cleansing is that politically correct way to say, genocide in the making. The poor fall victim to genocide while the up scale are “ethnically cleansed. Bet you didn’t know that war had it’s up side did you. Yup, war has an “up side and is profitable beyond the dreams of avarice. Warmongers are if they are anything, thinking about profitability. War is good for the old portfolio and more war is more profitable and politically expedient. Those that die are expedient and those that “do the war are profited handsomely. Halliburton and Deadeye Dick Cheney. Now there’s a match made in warmongering heaven. Does the Angel of Death earn overtime pay?
So, who’s next? Iran? Syria? Some new “axis of incivility? Are the Persians uncivilized in that non-proliferation designative manner and is that a case for war? Nukes, pukes, punks, and politicians, yet it’s the children that always die. India isn’t considered a nuclear threat nor is Pakistan considered a nuclear threat and Israel is a nuclear threat but the politicians turn the blind eye. None of that is news or newsworthy however, here comes the rationales. The Iranians are the bad guys today and tomorrow it’s the North Koreans. Or the Somalians or whomever has some unexploited oil. Osama bin Ladin or possibly it’s a Mad Hatter or how does any of it matter. War is on a political agenda and the innocent get to die. None of that is news and that is the single gravest tragedy of our shared and fading day. War and dying are the definitive for our day and we all are simply fodder. Peace on earth? Not on this earth. Not today and not tomorrow or any day in our near future.
